The Collection 244 cuvée from Louis Roederer bears this name because it designates the 244th blend of the House. To further enhance the quality of the House's blends and to bring more transparency to the blends, Louis Roederer has embarked on a new approach with the creation of this Collection cuvée.
Made from grapes sourced equally from the vineyards of "La Rivière", "La Montagne" and "La Côte", Collection is composed of a base vintage, reserve wines aged in wood, and wine from the "perpetual reserve" which follows the principles of the solera and was started in 2012. Each edition of Collection is thus unique yet always representative of the identity and know-how of Roederer. This Collection champagne is the worthy successor to Louis Roederer's Brut Premier.
Collection 244 is composed of 41% Chardonnay, 33% Pinot Noir, and 26% Meunier. This cuvée is made with 54% of the 2019 harvest (of which 5% is vinified in wood), 10% reserve wines aged in wood, and 36% perpetual reserve. Malolactic fermentation is partially carried out at 35% and the wine is dosed as Brut at 7 g/L.
The year 2019 is a solar year. Spring and summer were dry and hot. This vintage gave grapes of superb maturity, notably thanks to a moderate yield. Grapes that allowed for dense and fresh wines.
The Collection 245 is distinguished by a beautiful golden yellow color, typical of great champagnes, with regular and dynamic effervescence.
On the nose, the bouquet is immediate, both ample and full of freshness. It reveals a basket of ripe fruits but delicate where one finds with precision the yellow fruits like mirabelle, sweet citrus, and delicate white flower perfumes like jasmine. One also discovers iodized, smoky notes, linked to autolysis and wood aging. After a few minutes of aeration, the nose opens up to notes of chalk, slight reduction announcing a concentrated and powerful wine.
The palate opens with a frank and powerful attack, carried by a magnificent texture. The mid-palate is dense, with notes of juicy fruits. The finish is long, chalky, and full of freshness. The smoky notes finally take over to support this very flavorful finish.
The price of the Collection 244 bottle by Louis Roederer is 53,95 €. This price, for a champagne of such quality, is particularly attractive. The Collection 244 cuvée is an excellent choice for those seeking a champagne that is affordable given its exceptional qualities. It positions itself as a safe investment for all lovers of exceptional champagnes.
