Louis Roederer's Collection 244 cuvée is so named because it is the House's 244th blend. To further enhance the quality of the House's blends and bring greater transparency to them, Louis Roederer has embarked on a new approach with the creation of this Cuvée Collection.
Made from one-third each of grapes from the "La Rivière", "La Montagne" and "La Côte" vineyards, Collection is composed of a base vintage, reserve wines aged in wood and wine from the "perpetual reserve", which follows the principles of the solera and was launched in 2012. Each edition of Collection is therefore unique, yet always representative of Roederer's identity and expertise. This Collection champagne is the worthy successor to Louis Roederer's Brut Premier.
Collection 244 is composed of 41% Chardonnay, 33% Pinot Noir and 26% Meunier. This cuvée is made with 54% of the 2019 harvest (of which 5% is vinified in wood), 10% of reserve wines aged in wood and 36% of perpetual reserve. Malolactic fermentation is partially carried out at 35%, and the wine is blended at 7 g/L Brut.
2019 was a sunny year. Spring and summer were dry and hot. This viticultural year produced grapes of superb ripeness, thanks in particular to a moderate yield. The grapes produced dense, fresh wines.
This Collection 244 is a brilliant gold color with shimmering highlights.
The bouquet is immediate, full-bodied and fresh. It unveils a basket of ripe yet delicate fruit, including yellow plums, sweet citrus and delicate white flowers such as jasmine. We also discover iodized, smoky notes linked to autolysis and ageing in wood. After a few minutes' aeration, the nose opens with notes of chalk and slight reduction, heralding a concentrated, powerful wine.
The palate opens with a clean, powerful attack, carried by a magnificent texture. The mid-palate is dense, with juicy fruit notes. The finish is long, chalky and full of freshness. Smoky notes finally take over to support this very tasty finish.
