Louis Roederer's cuvée Collection 243 bears this name because it is the 243rd blending of the House. To take the quality of the House's blends a step further, and to bring greater transparency to the blends, Louis Roederer has embarked on a new approach with the creation of this cuvée Collection.
Made from one-third each of grapes from the "La Rivière", "La Montagne" and "La Côte" vineyards, Collection is composed of a base vintage, reserve wines aged in wood, and wine from the "perpetual reserve", which follows the principles of the solera and was launched in 2012. Each edition of Collection is therefore unique, yet always representative of Roederer's identity and expertise. This Collection champagne is the worthy successor to Louis Roederer's Brut Premier.
Collection 243 is composed of 42% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir and 18% Meunier. This cuvée is made with 59% of the 2018 harvest (of which 6% is vinified in wood), 10% of reserve wines aged in wood and 31% of perpetual reserve. Malolactic fermentation is partially carried out at 26%, and the wine is blended at 8 g/L Brut.
2018 was a singular year that broke many historical records in terms of heat, drought and sunshine. This vintage confers beautifully grained and textured Pinots Noirs, dense, saline Chardonnays and intensely fruity Meuniers.
This Collection 243 is a brilliant gold color with shimmering highlights.
The bouquet is immediate, full-bodied and fresh. It unveils a basket of ripe yet delicate fruit, including yellow plums, sweet citrus and delicate white flowers such as jasmine. After a few minutes' aeration, the nose opens up with notes of smoke and lightly toasted viennoiserie.
The palate is dense, deep and structured, with an immense saline freshness and a hint of bitterness.
