How Moët & Chandon Brut Impérial is made

Created in 1869, Moët & Chandon Brut Impérial is the most faithful expression of the House's style. Its blend is based on a meticulous selection of over 200 crus from the most prestigious Champagne terroirs, guaranteeing a perfect balance between aromatic richness, freshness and elegance.

Rigorous selection of grape varieties

Moët & Chandon Brut Impérial is made from a trilogy of emblematic grape varieties:

• Pinot Noir (30-40%): gives the cuvée its structure and intensity. This grape variety comes mainly from the Montagne de Reims and Aube terroirs, renowned for their power and complexity.
• Pinot Meunier (30-40%): adds a silky texture and roundness on the palate. It is mainly harvested in the Marne Valley, where it flourishes on clay-limestone soils.
• Chardonnay (20-30%): infuses the wine with finesse and freshness, thanks to grapes from Côte des Blancs grands crus such as Avize and Cramant.

Precise blending and controlled vinification

Moët & Chandon applies age-old know-how to preserve the authenticity and consistency of its Brut Impérial. The juices are fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats to preserve their aromatic purity and reveal all the richness of the Champagne terroirs. This choice of vinification gives the champagne a distinctive signature, where freshness and precision dominate.

A special feature of Brut Impérial is the addition of 20-30% reserve wines. These wines, aged for several years in the cellar, add depth and complexity to the final blend. They also enable us to maintain exemplary consistency, vintage after vintage.

Optimum ageing for perfect expression

After blending, Brut Impérial rests for around 24 months on its lees in Moët & Chandon's historic cellars in Épernay. This maturation process develops the champagne's secondary aromas, giving it its brioche notes and silky texture.

Disgorgement is followed by a controlled dosage of 9 g/L, an ideal balance that enhances the wine's natural freshness without altering its aromatic brilliance. This signature dosage ensures perfect harmony between fruitiness, smoothness and liveliness.
