      Description

Philipponnat's Blanc de Noirs 2011 is a masterful demonstration of the house's expertise in winemaking and blending Pinot Noirs.

It's a champagne made from Pinot Noir grapes grown on the Premiers and Grands Crus terroirs of the Montagne de Reims, Mareuil-sur-Aÿ and Aÿ.

The 2011 vintage is a vintage of contrasts: after a harsh, dry winter, the spring was early and warm, favoring rapid vegetation growth. The rest of the season alternated between hot weather and rain. With the first grapes picked at the end of August, the 2011 harvest became the earliest in Champagne's history, offering a vintage full of finesse.

The Blanc de Noirs 2011 Philipponnat was vinified partly in vats, with partial malolactic fermentation, and partly in oak barrels, without malolactic fermentation.

The dosage is Extra Brut (4.25g/l) to maintain a fine balance between freshness and vinosity, without masking the wine's character and purity.

      Tasting

      By Patrick Borras

      Robe

Cuvée Blanc de Noirs 2011 Philipponnat is deep gold in color. Its bubbles are fine and lively.

      Nose

This champagne has an intense nose, with powerful aromas of ripe, even stewed fruit. The first nose is rich and sustained. The second nose is full of vivacity, freshness and minerality, with beautiful chalky notes.

      Palate

On the palate, Blanc de Noirs 2011 Philipponnat starts with a rich, fresh attack, then reveals a beautiful vinosity. The palate is mature, dense and powerful.

      Service

I recommend serving the Blanc de Noirs 2011 Philipponnat at a temperature of 10°C. It's a cuvée that can be enjoyed as an aperitif, but also goes well with leg of lamb or red mullet.
