The Millésime 2013 Grand Cru produced by the Le Mesnil cooperative is a champagne that offers both the edge and purity of a very fine year, underlined by the terroir of Mesnil-sur-Oger.
The Coopérative du Mesnil-sur-Oger is one of only two Champagne cooperatives authorized to use the village's name as a trademark. Mesnil-sur-Oger is one of the most emblematic villages on the Côte des Blancs. It's a terroir with chalky, poor soils that force the vines to plunge deep into the soil for nourishment. The result is grapes of great freshness and immense minerality.
This 2013 Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru is made from Chardonnay grapes grown exclusively on the Grand Cru terroir of Mesnil sur Oger. Vinified in stainless steel tanks to retain maximum freshness and lightness, the wine is then bottled and lowered into cellars several dozen meters underground.
The year 2013 was marked by singular climatic conditions: a very long, cold and snowy winter, followed by a rainy and gray spring. A very sunny summer enabled the grapes to ripen beautifully. Harvesting began at the end of September, something not seen in Champagne for some fifteen years.
This 2013 vintage is therefore characterized by beautiful freshness, but also fruity aromas.
Millésime 2013 Grand Cru Le Mesnil has a golden color, with numerous fine bubbles.
On the nose, this cuvée reveals pretty notes of fresh fruit, but also a palpable minerality. The second nose, after a few minutes' warming, reveals more gourmand notes, with a touch of brioche.
On the palate, the attack is pleasant, with pronounced citrus notes. On the finish, the mineral character of Mesnil-sur-Oger comes through. The finish is persistent, with a chalky, iodized note.
A magnificent cuvée, whether as an aperitif or at the table with seafood dishes.
