The 171st edition of Krug Grande Cuvée once again underlines Krug's unique expertise. Since 1843, Krug Grande Cuvée has embodied the champagne that the house's founder, Joseph Krug, wanted to offer his customers, so that they could enjoy the best that Champagne has to offer every year, regardless of the vagaries of the weather.
This 171st Edition Grande Cuvée is a blend of 131 wines from 12 different years, the youngest dating from 2015 and the oldest from 2000.
The 2015 vintage was marked by unprecedented heat and drought, which lasted from late May to mid-August, slowing down the development of the grapes. Fortunately, rain and reasonable temperatures in the second half of August enabled the fruit to develop in good conditions. Harvesting took place in the rain between August 31 and September 21, with great heterogeneity from one plot to the next. To create this edition, the cellar master wanted to accentuate the diversity of this year's delicate aromatic expressions with a wide range of wines from several parcels and 11 different years.
This 171st edition Grande Cuvée is composed of 45% Pinot Noir, 37% Chardonnay and 18% Meunier. Krug's reserve wines make up 42% of the final blend, giving the wine roundness and fullness.
In true Krug style, all the wines were vinified and aged in oak barrels, and the bottles spent 7 years in the Maison's cellars before being released on the market.
This champagne is pale gold in color, with fine, lively bubbles.
The nose reveals aromas of flowers, ripe, candied and dried citrus fruits, almond paste and gingerbread.
The palate is very gourmand, revealing toasty notes and flavors of marzipan, quince, lemon, limoncello and dried fruit.
Grand Cuvée Krug is the gastronomic champagne par excellence. It lends itself to a multitude of culinary pairings, from the simplest to the most refined, such as aged parmesan, turbot with truffles, oysters, grilled shrimp, Indian or Moroccan dishes, or as a dessert with carrot cake, tarte Tatin or cheesecake.
