More than twenty years have gone into the creation of each bottle of Krug Grande Cuvée, created beyond the very notion of vintage to offer the most generous expression of Champagne according to Krug, with exceptional finesse.
This 163rd edition of La Grande Cuvée is the result of blending 183 wines from 12 different years, between 1990 and 2007.
Since 1843, Krug Grande Cuvée has embodied the champagne that the house's founder, Joseph Krug, wanted to offer his customers, so that they could enjoy the best Champagne has to offer every year, regardless of the vagaries of the weather.
Krug Grande Cuvée is the House's signature wine, the embodiment of Krug's philosophy and expertise. It is a blend of over 120 wines from ten years, some of which have been kept for 15 years.
The blending of these many years gives Krug Grande Cuvée a unique richness of aromas and flavors, and an incredible generosity that could not be expressed with the wines of a single year.
It then develops exceptional finesse when resting in our cellars for a further six years.
The Krug ID
Each bottle of Krug tells its own story. Thanks to the Krug ID, a 6-digit number on the back label of each bottle, Eric Lebel, our Cellar Master, tells what makes each cuvée special, from the challenges of the season to the details of its creation. The Krug ID also serves as a reference for storing bottles of Krug Champagne to be enjoyed at a later date, especially Krug Grande Cuvée, which, like all Krug champagnes, ages admirably. We might compare the making of a Krug Grande Cuvée to that of a traditional French dish: ratatouille. This may seem a surprising parallel, but there are two ways to prepare ratatouille.
Either you throw all the ingredients simultaneously into a casserole dish and, in 20 minutes, your ratatouille is ready.
Or you decide to respect and preserve the taste of each vegetable by cooking them separately and only bringing them together at the end of cooking, then leaving them to blend harmoniously for a while. This brings out the best in each ingredient and produces a sublime dish.
The second method may be more laborious, but the dish gains in color, aroma and texture. At Krug, our aim is to get the best out of each parcel, to give it time to express the full potential of its grapes, and only then to proceed with the blending.
In the tasting room, we taste the result to confirm that we've used the right plot, in the right place.
