Antoine Chevalier's Cuvée Carkonnia is a rich, expressive Blanc de Blancs champagne. It can be enjoyed as an aperitif or with fish or hard cheeses such as 24-month Comté.
The 2017 vintage is the first for Antoine Chevalier, who took over the family vineyards and decided not only to convert them to organic viticulture, but also to vinify his own cuvées.
Settled in the Coteaux Vitryats, a region where the soil is predominantly chalk, Antoine Chevalier owns a mosaic of parcels located in 3 villages, all of which are planted with Chardonnay.
Cuvée Carkonnia 17 is made from a vineyard located in Vitry-en-Perthois, in a place called Le Jardin de Meunier. It's a misnomer, since the only grapes grown here are Chardonnay. A Chardonnay that's both round and generous, as it knows how to be in this part of Champagne, but also fresh and mineral thanks to the impact of the terroir.
These grapes are vinified and matured partly in stainless steel vats and partly in oak barrels, bringing freshness and purity from the vats, but also sapidity from the wood.
After nearly 4 years in the house cellars, the cuvée is offered for tasting with a very light Extra Brut dosage of 2g/L.
Carkonnia 17 by Antoine Chevalier is a Blanc de Blancs champagne with a bright, luminous color. Its bubbles are fine and numerous.
Its rich, powerful nose immediately evokes yellow fruits, as well as more pastry-like notes.
On the palate, this cuvée opens with a supple, round attack. The mid-palate reveals the wine's lovely texture, full-bodied and generous. The palate is generous, with an elegant hint of woodiness, well supported by great minerality. Expressive and broad.
Carkonnia 17 from Antoine Chevalier can be enjoyed as an aperitif, but also with noble fish, shellfish or an aged Comté cheese.
Tasting
By Patrick BorrasThe sparkling pale gold color immediately sets the tone. This is a Blanc de Blancs from chalky soil! The bubbles are fine, delicate and pleasing to the eye.
On the nose, fresh citrus and mineral notes echo the chalk of the terroir. It's a very pleasant nose, with lovely aromatic intensity, particularly on the fruit. Brioche aromas round out this beautiful palette.
Carkonnia 17 is very pleasant on the palate, with a round attack, followed by a rich, unctuous finish. This texture is certainly due to the maturing of this fine champagne on fine lees. The finish remains lively, offering excellent balance.
I recommend serving this cuvée as an aperitif, but its salinity and sapidity also make it a great match for seafood. A superb discovery!
