Description

The Les Coupés 2020 cuvée by Nicolas Maillart is a champagne of rare elegance. It offers aromas of ripe fruit and exceptional freshness.

The Making of Les Coupés 2020 Champagne by Nicolas Maillart

This cuvée is one of the very few in Champagne, along with Les Vieilles Vignes Françaises from the house of Bollinger, made from vines planted on their own roots, without the American rootstock that has been standard in Champagne since the phylloxera epidemic that devastated French vineyards in the early 20th century. It is made exclusively from Pinot Noir from the "Les Coupés" plot located in Écueil, classified as Premier Cru. Planted in 1973, it is a massal selection on its own roots. This vine grows on sandy soil with a chalky subsoil, benefiting from a south-facing exposure at the bottom of the slope. Vinification takes place in oak barrels, followed by aging on the lees for about eight months. Malolactic fermentation is not carried out to preserve the freshness and liveliness of the wine. The dosage is 0 g/L, allowing the terroir and the grape variety to be fully expressed.

The 2020 Vintage

The year 2020 in Champagne was marked by favorable climatic conditions, with a mild spring and a hot summer, allowing optimal ripening of the grapes. These conditions contributed to the production of balanced wines, combining aromatic richness and freshness. The "Les Coupés" plot particularly benefited from this vintage, offering grapes of exceptional quality.

Tasting the Cuvée

  • Color

The Les Coupés 2020 cuvée presents an elegant robe with coppery highlights, adorned with fine bubbles forming a light disk.

  • Nose

The nose is powerful, revealing aromas of ripe and stewed fruits, accompanied by lactose and milk caramel notes. Woody and smoky touches enrich the aromatic complexity.

  • Palate

On the palate, the wine is intense and rich, combining power and freshness. The flavors of ripe fruit and caramel perceived on the nose are prolonged, supported by a marked minerality. The finish is long, pure, and clean.
