Cuvée Mesnillesime from Guy Charlemagne is a magnificent showcase for one of Champagne's greatest terroirs, the Mesnil-sur-Oger area.
It's a champagne made from the first vintages (the best juices) of the Mesnil-sur-Oger Grand Cru. The jewel in the crown of Maison Charlemagne, this vintage combines authenticity with the pursuit of perfect quality.
This champagne is partially vinified in oak barrels, without malolactic fermentation. The dosage is Extra Brut, around 3g/l, to allow the full minerality and purity of Mesnil-sur-Oger to express itself.
This terroir is one of the sharpest in Champagne, so wines from it need several years in the shade of a cellar to round out and fully express their potential.
Cuvée Mesnillesime 2004 Charlemagne has a pale yellow color with green highlights, studded with fine bubbles.
The nose is powerful and elegant, dominated by acacia honey. The second nose opens with notes of candied lemon, smoke and mixed peppers.
Smooth and complex on the palate, it opens with elegant, discreet oak. It continues with a basket of candied fruit, dominated by citrus.
The finish is remarkably long, both fresh and vanilla-like.
