Description

Light and subtle with melted tannins, this Coteaux Champenois Vrigny Rouge 2018 reveals all the qualities of this Premier Cru Terroir.

This Coteaux Champenois is made exclusively from Pinot Noir from a single plot "Les Champs Chevalier" in Vrigny, a Premier Cru village on the Montagne de Reims. This parcel is located at an altitude of between 140 and 170 m, on an east-facing slope with soils composed of Thanetian sands. This Coteaux Champenois comes from 45-year-old vines planted at 8500 vines/hectare as a result of massal selection.

The 2018 vintage is characterized by superb ripeness and aromas of cherry and redcurrant for the Pinots. One superlative after another describes this excellent, rarely seen year. For the harvest of this parcel, the weather allows us to wait until September 13, and thus gain a few extra degrees in the grapes, essential for the production of an exceptional Coteaux Champenois.

The grapes are rigorously hand-picked, and only the ripest, healthiest bunches are picked. Semi-carbonic maceration in whole bunches, with punching down of the cap, takes place over 12 days. Alcoholic fermentation is carried out spontaneously by yeasts indigenous to the locality, and malolactic fermentation is natural.

The wine is aged on its lees for 22 months in small oak barrels, and bottled by gravity, by hand. The House uses traditional Champagne corks and staples.

On the nose and palate, this Coteaux Champenois reveals lovely aromas of red berries, redcurrant, raspberry, blackberry jam and sweet spices.

This Coteaux Champenois Vrigny Rouge 2018 from Maison Roger Coulon will be perfect as an aperitif with a superb Italian ham.
