The Making of Cristal 2016 Louis Roederer Champagne

The Cristal 2016 cuvée is crafted from a blend of 58% Pinot Noir and 42% Chardonnay, sourced from 32 parcels located in the finest crus of Champagne: Verzenay, Verzy, Beaumont-sur-Vesle, Aÿ, Avize, Mesnil-sur-Oger, and Cramant. Vinification is carried out partly in stainless steel vats (69%) and partly in oak (31%). Malolactic fermentation was blocked to preserve all the freshness and aromatic intensity of the vintage. The dosage is 7 g/L, enhancing the purity and precision of this cuvée. After extended aging on the lees, this cuvée reveals exceptional complexity and depth.

The 2016 Vintage

The year 2016 in Champagne is distinguished by a contrasting climate: a cool and humid spring followed by a dry and hot summer marked by a heatwave in August. The harvest, which took place between September 15 and October 1, yielded grapes of perfect maturity. The heatwave Pinot Noirs bring intense fruity flavors and a silky texture, while the Chardonnays, resulting from slow maturation, confer a chalky and saline dimension.
