Cuvée Cépages Blancs from Maison Fleury is a bold champagne that highlights the finesse and aromatic richness of Chardonnay, supported by a grape variety that is rare in Champagne: Pinot Blanc.
Maison Fleury is the forerunner of biodynamic viticulture in Champagne, and began its conversion to organic viticulture as early as 1970, long before it became fashionable. Today, Fleury is certified Agriculture Biologique (AB) and Demeter for its entire 15-hectare estate.
Cuvée Cépages Blancs 2009 combines Chardonnay (94%) with a touch of Pinot Blanc (6%) to bring out notes of ripe, juicy fruit. This cuvée is vinified partly in vats (34%) and partly in oak barrels (66%), providing both the freshness and purity of vat ageing and the complexity and aromatic richness of oak barrel ageing.
Malolactic fermentation is carried out, bringing roundness and delicacy to the Cuvée Cépages Blancs. This champagne is corked, again to bring complexity and aromatic depth.
This is a champagne that will particularly resonate with gourmet dishes.
Tasting
By Patrick BorrasCuvée Cépages Blancs 2009 from Maison Fleury has a sparkling, limpid color with golden highlights. The bubbles are fine, regular and brilliant.
This cuvée has a very fruity nose, with lovely notes of citrus fruit, citrus peel, grapefruit and yellow lemon. The nose is also fresh and mineral, with notes of chalk.
The palate is rich and unctuous, punctuated by fresher, more mineral notes of chalk and flint. A fresh finish is enhanced by citrus aromas (lemon, lime).
A surprisingly fresh and lively aperitif champagne. A pure, intense cuvée that I recommend serving at 9°C.
