Description

Jérôme Coessens' Millésime 2015 is a complex, assertive champagne.

Made from old Pinot Noir vines, it is vinified in the same way as the house's Blanc de Noirs. Only two important details change the result: 48 months' extended ageing on lees and a low dosage to allow the wine's character to express itself.

This is a rare cuvée, produced at a rate of around 3,000 bottles every 3 to 4 years, depending on the quality of the year's wine.

Vintage 2015 Coessens has a long, fluid attack, evoking cocoa, but also ripe fruit. The finish is long, lasting several seconds, with a saline touch.

Champagne Coessens is a wine born of a Burgundian philosophy and spirit. All cuvées are made from a single Largillier climat (family monopoly), a single Pinot Noir grape variety and a single year (with the exception of the Soléra). In 2011, while digging soil pits in Largillier, Jérôme Coessens discovered that the subsoil of his parcel belonged to the Marly Kimmeridgian n°2: soil, subsoil and even exposure resemble Chablis' greatest terroir.

This soil alternates between clay banks (giving structure and substance on the palate) and limestone banks where the roots of the vines draw their minerality (providing length on the palate). Generally speaking, Largillier's clay-limestone soil is not very fertile, giving the vines a low level of development and vigor. This favors excellent ripening of the grapes, which hold all the promise of a great wine.
