Delphine Cazals' Millésime 2014 is a Blanc de Blancs champagne remarkably balanced between the delicacy and minerality of the Côte des Blancs and the richness of 2014.
Maison Cazals was founded by Claude Cazals, father of Delphine Cazals, who now runs the company. Its vineyards, located in the village of Mesnil-sur-Oger and the neighboring village of Oger, have the particularity of being very chalky, producing grapes with a frank vivacity, and wines that often need to be aged for a few years to soften their ardor and bring out their best.
Oger and Mesnil-sur-Oger are classified Grand Cru, the highest level of the Champagne appellation. Only 17 villages are classified Grand Cru.
2014 was a year of contrasts, with a magnificent, very dry spring, followed by a very hot start to summer, before a reversal of the trend with almost autumnal July and August. Fortunately, September saw the return of sunshine and warmth.
Vintage 2014 Grand Cru Cazals is a Blanc de Blancs, meaning that only the Chardonnay grape variety is used. This cuvée is vinified and aged in stainless steel tanks to retain maximum freshness.
Once bottled, this cuvée spends 7 years in the house's chalk cellars to round out its aromas. Wines from Mesnil-sur-Oger need this long cellaring time to develop a slight patina.
This champagne is measured in Extra Brut, which adds a touch of gourmandise.
Millésime 2014 Cazals is a champagne with a golden color, crisscrossed by fine, lively bubbles.
The nose reveals notes of citrus and yellow fruit, then after a few moments of aeration, notes of pastries come to the fore.
On the palate, this is a delicate, elegant champagne, with fine tension and the minerality characteristic of the Oger and Mesnil-sur-Oger terroirs. The fruity notes carry through to the finish, which resonates with a hint of iodine.
